The flush, and what it actually costs

When it isn't sediment
Two situations turn "annoying noise" into "stop and call someone."
If the sound is closer to a continuous hiss or a release of steam, especially from the top of the tank near the discharge pipe, that's the temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve doing its job because pressure or temperature inside the tank has exceeded a safe limit. Building code (IRC Section P2804.6.1) requires that discharge pipe to run to within 6 inches of the floor and terminate somewhere a burn or scald can't happen, for exactly this reason: what comes out can be scalding water or steam. Shutting off the gas control or breaker stops more heat going in, but not water already under pressure, so close the cold-water shutoff feeding the tank too if you can reach it safely. Don't touch the relief valve itself, and get a plumber out the same day.
If you smell gas along with any noise, that's not a plumbing call, that's outside, call the gas company, and don't flip any switches on the way out.
Don't let "just noise" become "no hot water"
A popping water heater is one of the few plumbing symptoms where the fix is genuinely cheap and the failure mode it prevents is genuinely expensive. A twenty-minute flush now is materially different from a flooded utility closet and an emergency same-day replacement quote later.
